Finally: Blog #9
I DID IT! MY LAST DANCE CONCERT IS NOW OVERRRRR! NO MORE DANCING FOR THE REST OF MY LIFEEEE!
I've literally been busting my butt trying to make this dance look good, making sure i had all my costumes together, communicating with my other partners and keeping up with deadlines. It was difficult, but its over now and I can't believe I made a dance of my own and put it out on the stage to be seen. I thank my dancers so much for trying to remember choreo and putting up with my constant changes. I also thank Kylie for trying to help me understand what she was doing and providing the paint for me to create the artwork on my dancers backs.
On the day of the show, me and Kylie really worked as a team: I helped her dancers with their hair to give it a "wet look" and she provided the body paint for me. I was initially going to use the materials she used to make the sculptures for her dancers, but my dancers were going to have it on their backs and in my dance, there was a lot of bending and leaning backward so it was best to choose the alternative, body paint. Plus she ran out of material to supply me with any so we came to the body paint conclusion. I much preferred that anyway because I could do it on my own and I don't like relying on people to do things for me. It was also safer and less time consuming.
Throughout the whole process of this project, the only other teammate I communicated with was Kylie. I honestly didn't know Mackenzie was apart of the dance project too but I did see her in the art room helping Kylie paint the bodies of her dancers. I really enjoyed how her dance was displayed and how the costume and background colors contrasted with the masks.
Our team met all our goals, we were on time with dances timeline surprisingly. I had to modify the cut music even more and make the dance shorter because at that point , I couldn't come up with anything else to put in the dance. I was honestly stuck but I feel like where I cut it at for the show was a smart smart smart smart smart move. I wish I would have thought of that sooner.
I had to take the time to make sure everyone was ready, choreography reviewing, etc. before I started getting ready which was very new. Normally I get ready like everyone else but since my dance was second in the show, we had to do things a little different.
For my dance, I used background colors like red, turquoise, and dark purple and incorporated silhouettes to give it a dramatic feel and so it comes off as dark. I enjoyed watching them perform and exaggerate their movements. Even though there were a few mistakes, the audience failed to notice..everything was fineeeee. My inspiration for lights came from the dance trip we took to Pittsburgh to attend the National Student Dance Festival. Every night after we got to take our chosen classes with dancers from all over the world, we were able to watch some of the dance schools that were there, perform and they had so many cool light styles that I couldn't help but recognize. They had side lights, white lights, grey lights, and the list goes on. But see, at ourrrrr schoolllll....we don't have that but I tried to pick lights that were kinda cool like they had theirs
.
Here is a video from dress rehearsal: (disregard the end, we most definitely fixed that like 10 minutes before the show and it looked great but here it is!!) I was ducked down at the side of the auditorium because no other choreographers were in the crowd and I didn't know if we were suppose to be in there or not soooo yesss
(I was mad because they wouldn't stay still while I was trying to do their back. They had to do their makeup in the time that I was doing that within only 45 minutes so :)))))) That was stressful)
I enjoyed spending these last few moments with the people I enjoy being around even though half the time we were arguing with each other, we still enjoyed the energy that all of us gave off. Although it was fun, I still proved to myself that working with people is a no: I don't enjoy it. I just like to do my own thing and make my own decisions and execute things how I want them to be executed without being worried that it will look bad.
Again, I've learned a lot from the Netflix series skin wars on sorta kinda how to body paint so I took that into consideration also with the fact that painting is one of my favorite art forms so having the ability to paint on a human body canvas was pretty cool. I normally do face painting but having a back to paint on was different. ( I don't normally do those cliche paints of sunsets on peoples backs like these wanna-be tumblr kids do so it was new)
(This is one of the challenges they had on the show)
